Brian, is correct and you don't lose security.

I have run into the same problem, it seems to be mainly with newer versions
that integrate more with outlook and outlook express. What Norton does it
scan the email during the POP communication before letting the mail client
get it. I don't know if the problem is in Norton or the mail client but it
causes the mail client to abort with a timeout error.

Make sure that the user only disables the email scanning and NOT the real
time file protection and they will still be safe. the rtfs will catch any
viruses attached to email messages, There might be some way around it, but
I've never seen or heard of one.
