The only disadvantage to synynoms is that the domains are treated exactly the same (which is what I think you want in this case).  The problem would come if you decided down the road to add new users to the new domain you didn't want in the old.  Any 'new' user will wind up working on both the new and old domain name, you won't be able to seperate say 'bill@newdomain' from 'bill@olddomain'.

It would solve the problem of doing the forwarders if this could be done.

Can't you just rename the domain and set the old domain name as a synynom for the new one?
