If your explanation is right, and I must admit, it sounds quite plausible, then Beaty's gem would appear to be made of glass. It would also neatly explain why "none of them will stick their neck out to declare that steam tables which have been in use for decades are wrong." On the other hand your explanation may just be a clever rationalization by someone who finds a Black Queen of Hearts rather disturbing. ;-) Unless one can be 100 per cent sure that you are right, it would be stupid to ignore the possibility you ain't. One wouldn't want to repeat Newland's mistake, would one. One wouldn't want to throw a diamond into the bin because one thought it was glass.
