Okay, I went and read the paper. They were using plain old laser diodes in the upper 600 nm range. These run about 50% efficiency. A program called SHEDS has lab efficiency at 65% with a goal of 80%. (All percentages are power line to optical.)


Considering the effect of the optical source only, this is a COP of 10.
