The 1H-1 or 1H-2 reaction with 3Li-6 or 3Li-7 in the Pd lattice could well
explain the
 gammaless presence of Helium and/or Tritium (a sensitive issue in certain
quarters) plus an 
occasional "thermalized neutron"  leaving the D-D ---> 2He4 plus 24 Mev
Gamma flap as another Red Herring.
