Intelligent discussion of any topic is not a waste of time... inspiration usually comes from unlikely places.

He just signs off when he doesn't have time to or doesn't want to converse. I certainly do agree with use of the [OFF TOPIC] or [OT] designations when the discussion drifts completely away from a science topic.
