They have been done in by pesticides, pavement, the destruction of wetlands, and water pollution.
Also bright lights. Light interferes with their sex life, which is the only life they've got. The adult flight stage of their life cycle lasts a week or so, and most adults do not eat. They just fly, copulate and die.
