Clearly a small but very powerful submarine type nuclear fission reactor looks to be able to power a substantial starship. The reactor would need very little heavy shielding as it could be positioned so as to shield only the tiny sector of emissions directed at vulnerable sections of the ship. No issue emitting radiation into the void of space, indeed one would want to emit as much to the void as possible as cooling. Of course the utility of a 'cold fusion' direct to electricity reactor is very much more appealing. In either case the 'thermal radiator' will be the challenge.
