Here are two documents from the lawsuit between Rossi and I.H.: EXPERT REPORT OF RICK A. SMITH, P.E., Document 235-1 SUPPLEMENTAL EXPERT REPORT OF RICK A. SMITH, P.E., Document 235-10

Even if you are not interested in the lawsuit, you may find these educational. They begin by covering elementary thermodynamics. These are things everyone here should know, but alas, some people do not know. Smith has taught professional level courses to engineers, and he is skilled at explaining things. The documents go on to describe the kind of calorimetry done on industrial scale equipment. There are many important, concrete details. Such as the fact that a cooling tower capable of removing 1 MW of heat is roughly 12' x 12' x 12'. There is a photo of a cooling tower of this size. The documents describe many aspect of the case in detail. For example, they explain why the instruments are incapable of measuring the enthalpy of this system, and why it is likely Rossi's device circulated only hot water instead of steam. Smith's conclusions, on p. 28 of the first document, are irrefutable. He shows there was no steam flow; no heat exchanger on the mezzanine; that Penon's evaluation violates the laws of thermodynamics, and so on. Like any good teacher, Smith livens up presentation with some droll comments: Regarding entropy: ". . . energy systems always 'roll downhill' when left to themselves. Thermal systems will always proceed from hot (higher energy) to cold (lower energy), left to themselves; they will never go from cold to hot unaided. The human body does not generally become stronger, healthier, or more agile as one ages. The author has personal experience with this." (Based on his C.V., Smith is in his late 60s, I think.) "The Murray videos show a very marked temperature rise in the space, with temperatures approaching 373° K (absolute temperature), which is 100°C, which is 212°F. This is warm, even for Miami." Some understatements on p. 12: "Mr. Fabiani’s pressure and temperature data are reported to four decimal places. This would lead one to believe that the instrumentation used was capable of measuring pressure to 1/10,000 of a bar and temperature to 1/10,000 of a degree C. This is some serious research grade instrumentation. . . . On 07 Apr 2015, there was a day long power interruption. Here are graphs of Mr. Fabiani’s power input, pressure output, and temperature output data for 07 Apr 2015. . . . . Since there was a power interruption that day, one would expect to see a graph of the power input as a flat line at zero. However, the power is slowly and steadily increasing all day in a very linear fashion. . . ." "Very linear" indeed! >From 235-10: "The only access to the mezzanine is a rickety wooden stairs, which the attorneys made this author climb first (load test) before they would use it." - Jed
