The latest (and only useful) technology to use dirty coal is the Allam cycle – which uses supercritical CO2 and carbon capture. China will be the main customer.

This is probably the best technology for burning coal – but another way to look at it is that carbon is too valuable to burn. Why not convert all coal into structural carbon?
