I knew my questions are naive. Robin I think your analysis are correct. I think this secrecy is evolving from large organizations and governments. Thus we don't work together any longer. Instead we are isolating our self. The discussions here in Vortex show that this isolation is prevalent in the academical society as well. I can see no benefit from keeping this information secret. With very few exclusions is it justified for government to keep information away from the people. It actually will ruin the respect between the government an the people.
