The essay you provide highlights the effect of the “hard wired” instinct to be 
part of the HERD of people making up a society of economically driven humans 
and a FEELING it is good to be the most aggressive pecker in the flock, the top 
dog, the biggest ram or whatever.  The HERD  instinct is  probably more 
influential in the direction a global society is headed than the hard wired 
drive for procreation (i.e., SEX) is.

This HERD instinct has remained strong over the eons as in family, tribal, 
national, religious groups and now global entities.

However, as It labors to transcend  the instinctual human drives, REASON  is 
slowly gaining an upper hand from an optimist’s viewpoint.
