Joe is a strange dude, and not fully trustworthy, but he is not stupid. He said many people have done this experiment. If so, they must have checked with a mass spectrometer. I can't imagine they are going by the color alone.
I don't believe this, but I would not dismiss it out of hand. I am glad to hear that other people are testing it. It is worth a test.
