That's a new one for me. I'm not a definitive expert on relativity, other
than reading a lot of popular books on the most obvious effects relativity
produces, but it was my understanding that near luminal objects contract
(compress) ONLY in the vectored direction of luminosity. And, of course,
it's all relative, my dear Watson. The flattened pancake would think it was
you, the observer, as appearing to look more and more like warmed over
three-day-old road kill on a summer day road. Gak! My prose is in danger of
being accused of being too fragrant, in a luminous way. 

IOW, the basketball would appear visually to look more and more like a
flattened pancake. 

I invite critiques to illuminate me as to the errors in my illumination on
this subject.
