In the interim, prior to 25 - 30 years, it seems to me that there is a
good chance we might see distributed AC spread across the landscape as
small substations spring up at local "filling" stations - which use to
dispense gas but will soon "fill" the high efficiency batteries of
electric cars.

I'm thinking of something similar to the internet where small
distributed sub-generation stations constantly replenish the
electrical grid. Computers will constantly monitor the grid making
sure power is evenly distributed among all the "cells". In my view,
the beauty of such an interim solution would be that jihadists and
other idiots will be deprived the satisfaction of blowing up power
plants and as such deprive hundreds and thousands of businesses and
home owners of AC. If one or two sub stations are taken out nearby
substations ought to be able to take up the slack easily.

Eventually, however, most devices and appliances will be manufactured
with their own CF generators. No more plug'n'play!
