The study cited here indicates that the machine uses fewer resources. These studies probably compare the machine to what anthropologists call the "American method" of washing dishes or clothes, which is to use running water. Americans, along with people in India and several other countries, think that running water is clean water. We suspect that still or pooled water is contaminated. In some other countries, people tend to fill a sink or bucket with water, soak the dishes and then wash them. This takes less water. - Jed
