I don't know about Home Depot. They first started selling in the 1980s: http://inventors.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?site=http://americanhistory.si.edu/lighting/20thcent/invent20.htm%23in4 I think I have had some for 20 years, especially a seldom used one in a hallway. Wikipedia says the first one was introduced in 1980: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_fluorescent_lamp The 1990 Scientific American Special Issue on energy discusses them a lot. They were widespread by then. - Jed
