Yea, I think you're right. The alternative would be to commit *all* of
the autotools stuff to CVS (generated configure script, Makefile.in etc)
but I prefer not to do that.
On to Plan B: remove the libtool/aclocal stuff I added, instead hack the
configure script to check for mingw and apply a patch to ltmain.sh/libtool
to fix the bug in question.
Will see about doing that when I get home tonight.

My version of autotools sets a variable named "shrext_cmds". Your
ltmain.sh expects one named "shrext". The reason for the difference
completely evades me; it took me an hour to found this.
As a result, I have a broken libtool; compilation succeeded, but the
libraries had bogus names, so installation was impossible.
(I hacked ltmain.sh, and installation seems to be working now. It's not
finished yet, though.)
