Doesn't Compaq systems let you modify them from bootable Compaq CD Roms? How old is this laptop and have you tried Compaq's support site for this? The have an email response system where you ask a question and they try and get you a response in 24 hours. It has run about 85% accurate on some server issues, which is not bad for email support correct on first answer.
