Keep in mind sysrq works form inside X too... As long as the kernel is still running and the input layer is working you should be able to use the keys even if you can't see the results. X can not trap or block those key sequences... in fact some of the commands allow one to recover from a locked up X server, (although resetting the graphics card after a X failure may require some advanced preparation to safe the video state from before X is started).
