I have 3 partitions too but 1. ist production system 2. is log partition 3. is backup partition which I do an upgrade from the first partition
Then I reboot to this partition with lilo lilo -R <ImageName> reboot (of course this image but be a valid entry on the first partition in lilo.conf) I everything works you can activate the second one as default or upgrade first partition.
