mmm... I think you are making a bad measure. Do you have the tester with
the right amperage level? I mean, in the 0'2mA - 2A intervale? (you may
have an upper level of 0'2 [surely...])
I have made some measures adding USB bluetooth pens and the amperage
increases (0'2 for each pen).

The analog ammeter of course cannot reflect the instantaneous power
draw that may be occuring on the board during TX periods but it does
give a good estimate of the average current needed from the power
supply. I have many 12v 1A (nominal) power supplies that actually put
out close to 18v and hold ~17v when powering an ALIX board.
As for the behavior of the unmodified boards, I would also see them
simply shut down after a few minutes (or less) with high powered cards
inserted.
