Same results from me. Only rc2 works reliably. My configuration is: AP with atheros Wistron CM9, hostapd setup with WPA2-PSK with TKIP. Clients used for testing are two laptops with ralink chipset and two desktop pcs with atheros (all running microsoft OS). I also have same problems without the use of hostap (no securitu or wep security). The only thing I haven't tried yet is using the ath0 interface alone (I am using a bridge interface with ath0 and eth0 as br0).
