I've got two CF cards, one is 8GB in size which has Voyage MPD 0.8 and
it's working fine for many months. I have a second one of 16GB so I've
installed a fresh copy of Voyage MPD 0.8.5 to it. But on the first boot
up (I use an Alix 2d2) I'm getting a grub error 18. Error 18 from what
I see means "Unknown file system".

So I took the CF card out and mounted it to my Fedora PC and df shows
it's a ext2 partition as expected (since the instructions for the
install has you do mkfs as ext2). So I'm not sure what's wrong. Is
there a problem with the 16GByte CF card being too big? That was the
main difference I see between the 8GB card that works and the one that
doesn't.

I got this fixed, it was interesting but after your "try the 8GB card" suggestion, I took the 16GB CF card, and split it into two ext2 partitions and installed Voyage mpd 0.8.5 to the first 8GB partition.

With the smaller partition (ie. instead of using one big 16 GB partition), it booted fine without the Error 18.
