Actually, my opinion is somewhat similiar, this is why I dropped
news: support in 2.88 in favour of a better newsreader interface.
I wasn't aware that someone really missed it :)
I'd be glad to leave the implementation of a usable news:
system to a plugin programmer, though. Perhaps this could stirr up
some ideas for the plugin API :)
