In a way, I did this -- as part of a 'complete' delete-&-reinstall effort (I
know, there's MUI stuff that won't touch, but I figured it was worth a
try).

Following the reinstall, at the suggestion of another helpful soul on this
list, I tried selecting *and then deselecting* the 'offline browsing'
setting. That seems to have done the trick.
