Both have exactly the same speed, since they share the same engine.

I have not tried Apdf on a 68030 system, but on 68040 and 68060, it
is usually faster than the old 1.3.

There is one thing that can make things really slow, though. Some files
use Type3 fonts where each character is individually LZW-compressed.
This means that gzip has to be called once per character to display the
page...
You can check if your speed problem is that one going to the fonts
window, and scanning the fonts on the current page. If there is a Type3
font, try adding a fontmap entry in the document's settings, to remap it 
to some Type1 font. If the problem is the one described above, this should 
speed things up dramatically. (This solution will not work for the plugin,
though).
