I don't want to dig any deeper in what appears to be a can of worms, nor
have I followed any part of the discussion mentioned above, but if I
understand correctly what would be needed is a new font/character system
that supports unicode (yes, I know everybody got this far - wait for it).
Applications that are aware of this can then use the new API that comes
along with this new system.
And then, ON TOP of this system would be new versions of the existing
diskfont.library (and any other 'old style' API libraries). These new
versions of old libraries would then allow the 'old style' applications to
work like they used to, allowing both old and new style to be used at the
same time.
Since Unicode was made to be expandable by additive method and includes
(among others) all European characters, it should easily be a superset of
what the Amiga does now, so providing backward compatibility should then be
a matter of providing the old style API which maps old style calls to the
Unicode-supporting layer using latin1.
But I guess time is the old enemy - it's probably one of those things that
are easier said than done.
