Thanks for the advice guys, but,  I've already tried both settings of
"Offline browsing" in the menu with "Offline detection" set to "Manual", and
tried "Offline detection" set to "TCP/IP Stack". In the later case "Offline
browsing" is greyed out in the menu.

Any more suggestions?
