Whoa! What is this? It seems to be working at last…

This is what I did:

First, I followed these instructions.
http://ulaptech.blogspot.com.au/2012/11/shrew-soft-vpn-client-for-mac-os-x.html

In brief:
0) The installers are unsigned, so go to System Preferences - Security - tab
General - select Allow apps downloaded from - Anywhere
      - leave it set to this until you have finished - none of the packages is
signed.

1) Install the LGPL Qt Framework for Mac OSX.
   - the version is very important - Shrew will not work with anything else.
Two links are provided. The first is broken, so use the second one.
   - this is a compiled Qt, so it takes a few seconds to install.

2) Install the current release of the TUN/TAP driver for Mac OSX.
   - this also happens in seconds

3) The finally, install the Shrew Soft VPN client.
   - this is a compiled Shrew, ready to run
   - the file is not listed on the Shrew web site, but it downloads successfully
   - once again, takes moments…

4) Go back to system prefs and set the Allow apps back to its previous setting,
probably App Store and indentified developers

5) Reboot! this is required, I think, to start the TUN driver. No joy without
the reboot.

6) Start the Access Manager, import the .vpn file if not already done, then
click Connect. Enter user name, password and Tunnel Enabled!

Step 3 installs a ready-to-run Shrew compiled for OS X. It is downloaded from
the Shrew web site via a link. The file does not seem to be listed on the
website, however, so if you do not know the exact URL for the file, you cannot
find it.

Please let me know how it goes for you.
