Also, the fact that we saw PKG_CHECK_MODULES appear in your original output tells me that pkg-config was not installed when your configure was running. Otherwise, I believe it would have been macro expanded and you'd only see the expanded form. The mystery remains about your "make install-dep" not working. Is it possible that there is a network connectivity issue, and a related error message but the error message did not stick out clearly?
