Problem solved after 1)rebooting, 2) cd ~/vpp; rm -rf *; git checkout . 3) make install-dep; make bootstrap; make build-release.
Possibly it was just the reboot and make install-dep, I am not sure, but I saw nasm getting updated at that point. Thanks, Tom, for hints.
