Thanks for the info. I pulled the latest and retried, things seem a bit better 
now from a stability perspective. The performance issue looks like a CPU 
limitation on the client side (10K loops/s) based on the results. I have these:
*Client* : Intel Xeon CPU E5-2650 v2 @ 2.60GHz - 10210 loops/sec
*Server* : Intel Xeon CPU E5-2640 v3 @ 2.60GHz - 1630780 loops/sec

With these I'm getting 2.17 Gbps now. That's still a bit low, looking at the 
comparison between Xeon Gold 6146 and E5-2650 I can't really explain the 6x 
performance difference, but I have not really taken a dive into e.g. 
comparative AES NI performance etc.
