Well,  I seemed to have overcome the original problem, though I'm not quite sure how.  Partly it was a matter of mistyping one of the commands I tried, though I'm surprised it didn't throw an error.  But since I also (thought) I tried bgerror, I'm still confused about what really happened.  Anyway, after putting echoes all over the place in the combobox code and learning a lot about what happened, the thing works after all. 

Sorry for any lost sleep on the part of readers.
