Actually, even though the paths to images are saved as "absolute" in the
project, vtcl first looks for the absolute path, then if not found, looks
in the current directory. This allows you to ship your images in the same
directory as your project.
A possible feature for a future release would be to allow relative paths
when adding an image.
There are also the paths for multiple project files that could be made
relative as well.

Check out the code from the sf.net cvs, modify the code to
use the relative path format , test, generate patch files
from the changes, and submit them as a bug or feature request
patch file on the sf.net project.
When you say "object ... relative path format" what do you mean, exactly?
I'm presuming that by "absolute path ... for an object" you mean names like
::widgets::.top35
