 more like this is a weakness in the tk menu implementation. I shouldn't
 have to write a custom menu program just because I need long menus.

 I am planning on writing a new Geometry Manager window that is more
 flexible and informative (and doesn't rely on the placer).

 Double-click on the background on a toplevel and you will get the menu
 editor. It still has a few bugs, but it basically works.
