This is also annoying when you build an app on a small screen and people
run it on a larger one. They can't expand it to fill the whole screen. I
just had that comment today, and I'm adding the following to the main
proc:

    wm maxsize $widget(tkp4) [winfo screenwidth .] [winfo screenheight .]

where the widget alias is any toplevel where I need this.

I like the idea of the new preference setting patch!
