I have just been informed that the
following letter will be published in Saturday’s As an American Jew, I offer my
condolences to the Palestinian community on the death of Yasser Arafat.
While we should not forget his shortcomings as a leader of the Palestinian
liberation movement, his legacy represents the national aspirations of the
indigenous population of Palestinians and Israelis deserve a
chance to live together in peace. Contrary to popular belief, Arafat was
not an obstacle. The And peace, based on justice and
mutual cooperation, is the only thing that can save Palestinian and Israeli
societies from the inter-communal hatred that is destroying them both. The
first step is to end the 37-year-old Occupation that is reducing Palestinians to
imprisoned beggars and transforming Israelis into violent and racist
