How Did Bush Win?  Where Do We Go From Here?

A Public Meeting of the International Socialsit Organization

George W. Bush’s victory in the presidential election has been met with shock and outrage by progressives. With polls showing millions (nearly a majority of the country) opposed to the war and thinking that the country is on the wrong track, how is it that this “corporation dressed as a human being” was able to not only win the election, but win more votes than in 2000?

Already, the political pundits are saying that the real problem is that Kerry didn’t run a conservative enough campaign. They want to run even farther from issues like the war, gay marriage and abortion rights. But the real problem is that Kerry chose to ran a Bush-lite campaign, giving little sense of a genuine alternative for those sick of Bush’s policies, and actually strengthening the Right’s hand around issues like gay marriage.

For progressives and activists, we have two challenges: one is to understand what Bush’s victory means, and second is to discuss how we can continue to build—or more accurately, to rebuild the mass anti-war movement, the gay marriage movement and a militant women’s movement that can fend off the attacks that are sure to come under Bush’s coming reign. Come to this important discussion about these and other burning questions for our movements.
