Why We Say Bring the Troops Home Now! Thursday, February 24, 7:30 pm Memorial Lounge, Waterman Building University of Vermont Featuring: Fernando Suarez del Solar, whose son was one of the first U.S. soldiers killed in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. He has since joined Military Families Speak Out and founded Proyecto Guerrero Azteca to counter the targeting of Latino men and women by military recruiters. Lee Sustar of the International Socialist Organization and Chicago Labor Against the War. Lee Sustar's coverage of attacks on U.S. unions and labor rights under the auspices of "fighting terrorism" was Number 5 in Project Censor's top 10 censored stories of 2003. Elaine Hagopian, editor of Civil Rights in Peril: the Targeting of Arabs and Muslims and founder of the Trans-Arab Research Institute. Elaine Hagopian's Civil Rights in Peril received a 2004 Gustavus Myers human rights book award. Colleen McLaughlin, Vermont chapter of Military Families Speak Out and Burlington Anti-War Coalition. Colleen McLaughlin's son is currently serving in Iraq; she was instrumental in getting Question 7 - calling for troops out of Iraq now - on the Burlington March 1 Town Meeting Day ballot. Every day the need for a strong voice of opposition becomes more and more clear: as grisly details of the racist torture of Iraqi prisoners come to light, as Congress nevertheless confirms the appointments of torture's advocates to the Bush cabinet, as continuing occupation means deeper cuts in social and educational programs, and as military recruiters step up their efforts on the UVM campus, promising students that the Army will pay off their massive student loans. On March 1 Burlington could show the way to such opposition by becoming the first city in the country to proclaim that the best way to support U.S. troops is to BRING THEM HOME NOW! Come out and hear why activists across Vermont and across the country are calling for troops now - and help us build for a "Yes" vote on March 1! Free and open to the public.
