1700 American soldiers and 100,000 Iraqis have died in this illegal war for oil and conquest, and countless others have been injured physically, psychologically and spiritually. As the Iraqi people become more and more fed up with the US's belligerent occupation, the US plunges deeper into quagmire. Sinking support for the war has produced a crisis in the military, as recruitment is dropping to unprecedented levels below quota. Troops are having their tours extended against their will via the "stop-loss" program, and the military has massively stepped up recruitment.
Targeting especially the poor and people of color, they entice everyone with promises for a better future in school and careers, selling packs of lies, and even threatening young people with arrest or worse. At the same time Congress approves another blank check for Bush to continue the occupation of Iraq, our public schools are being closed down, understaf! ! fed and underfunded. As military recruiters prowl the halls of our high schools, colleges are closing their doors to students who cannot afford increasing fees.
As students from around the country have begun to show, counter-recruitment in schools and communities and unwavering support for those soldiers who refuse to fight, such as Pablo Paredes, Kevin Benderman and Carl Webb, can hit this seemingly unstoppable juggernaut where it hurts. Let's come together on Sept. 24, from Washington to San Francisco, in contingents to say:
