Sorry, but I don't really know any way around that beyond
modifications to the source code (which might be straight-forward).

It's not currently on the enhancement list at
http://www.vyatta.com/twiki/bin/view/Community/TopEnhancements ; why
don't you add it there and see how many others feel as you do?
