Many on this list know that I am not optimistic about the future of the
Yakima. I've fished the canyon lately and there are thousands of salmon
smolt in the river. Most of your presentations are intercepted by a salmon
smolt. In the upper river, my experience was the same as yours and it is
useless to fish in that area. As long as salmon are spawning, they will
frequent the same runs and harrass the trout, if there are any. Right now,
on the Snoqualmie, the same situation exists in the upper river and the
steelhead, what few are there, will not be receptive to a fly. I find them
in quiet, dead water areas, away from the salmon. I have been cutthroat
fishing and have scheduled a cutthroat trip on Sat. By the way, after the
Federal mandate to have all the nets pulled on the lower Columbia this
Spring, we experienced the largest return of salmon since 1938, prior to the
dams being built! Think we ought to concentrate on removing nets, or remove
dams? Jere
