No doubt, you have hit one 3 valuable pointers.  #2 a different hook has
been a point of interest of mine for sometime. Some of the worst hooks to
land steelhead on are steelhead fly hooks!  They dress a fly very nicely and
look good in a lapel or hanging in a picture frame, but are lousy hooks to
land steelhead on, especially when you pinch down the barb.  I often use
standard Mustad hooks and find the improvement is significant.  There is a
much bigger "bite" to many of their models and hang in when fishing barbless
much better.  Third, if you are swinging the fly near the surface, it is
imperative you do not set the hook on the visible sight of a take, but
rather on the feel of the fish and then the low to the water hook set moves
the hook much better than a lift which only picks up part of the bow in the
line and does little to drive the hook home.  Jere
