I got to know Jim Teeny very well marketing his products at Eddie Bauer.
Money, that evil stuff, was the motivation for getting to know Jim. I found
Jim to be an incredible outdoorsman. His level of understanding in a
fishing, or hunting, situation is unsurpassed. Many of the fly fishing
fraternity distain the man. They can't except his patenting a fly and
accuse him of "lining" fish in certain situations. I have asked Jim about
this and he admits it. He definately has marketed his products at holding
pools for salmon and steelhead; terminal destinations not unlike Hoodsport
that many fly anglers frequent. In these situations you will leader hook
fish. If there is something to learn from his success, however, it is to
understand why his Teeny nymphs work so well in certain situations. Often,
in rivers, salmon become very spooky and will not accept big flies. Small
flies often are much more successful in clear water, for instance, and
heavily fished waters as well. Size is the big key, IMO Fly anglers often
go to the gaudy, big marabous and never drop down in size. I was interested
to see that a lot of the flies that Justin used were small. I often think
of the success that Les Johnson had, years ago, fishing with Denny Hannah on
the Umpqua for Kings. The key, as he reported to me, was to go small; they
would not take a big fly. Jere
