I was there from Friday through Monday. The first two days were VERY windy,
which didn't help much though we were still able to fish some in the more
sheltered areas. I heard good reports from the aquarium and near the lower
end of the trail from the observatory. I fished the eastern end of the lake
most of the time and managed a few on Callibaetis emergers and duns and on a
size 20 parachute midge with a trailing shuck. The midge hatches were pretty
prolific and lasted most of the day, the Callibaetis were sparse and mostly
limited to maybe 1:00 to 3:00 in the afternoon. In spite of that, the fish
seemed to respond occasionally even when there were none in evidence. One
interesting observation; at some times they seemed to be keying in on
buzzing midges and I was able to bring a couple up by holding the rod tip up
and waking the fly across the surface in foot-long strips. I'm going to tie
up a few of Brian Chan's Lady McConnells to be ready next time. A friend of
mine took a few on black string leeches and I talked to a guy who had taken
seven on a scud fished on a full-sink line with a hand-twist retrieve.
