Dan, I fish off exit 38 often myself and those were little cutthroat.
They can cause a lot of missed strikes. I once missed 17 in a row before I
hooked one. I taught myself not to set the hook with these fish, it seemed
to me I'd just hit it too late or they would just bump it and sink the
fly...
I decided to let the fish catch itself. I just didn't set the hook. That
kept me from yanking some of those inch and a halfers onto the beach, and I
didn't miss any fish. I found it to be quite a relaxing way to fish, I
wasn't ducking any flys and I lost count of how many of those little 6 to 8"
cuts I caught.
