Big for a river.  Not so big for a lake.  Lake midges can be as large as size 8 or as small as 26 or smaller, i suppose.  I had good luck in May with size 10 patterns.  On the Bighorn in May of 1996, I witnessed the most amazing midge hatch that I've seen on a river.  Was able to fish clusters in size 12.  But the midges would cluster onto my cluster pattern, making it like a size 8 or something.  It was wild!

Is not a #14 a pretty big midge?
