These are all great questions, in fact, the same questions that I am asking myself after reading the article on two handed rods for beach fishing. I don't think that you are out in left field trying to do that with a double handed rod, but the two handed thing is a east coast phenomenon, and asking here is likely to get a bunch of blank stares about the issues, because two handed rods except for spey casting has not caught on here. I would point you to the Fly Fishing Forum (http://www.flyfishingforum.com/) where they might be able to answer you questions.
