Hey Kent,
I've never personally cared much for a Jon boat design, largely because of
poor freeboard and the inability of the boat to deal with a short, quick
chop. They are great for the swamps from which they emanated but you might
just get caught out on a desert lake with the wind blowing like the Mariah
itself. I would be leery, particularly in that length. Swamped once, you
might just be looking for another college chum to whom you might pedal it.
On the other hand, Brian Chan (you know, God himself) uses one up on the
plateau. Duck hunters like them because they can haul so many decoys. So
if you promise to be safe, stay close to the edge, don't cross big bodies of
water and use only an electric motor, I guess I'll let you buy it. BTW,
because they are essentially a rectangle, you can stand up in them with some
safety, always a plus for a tailing loop, not that you have one.
Bob, the Jon's OK but not the Jon boats necessarily, and it's only because
I've got diarrhea and might be sick that I'm firing all these little
needles.

Subject: Jon boat
I just got a phone call from an old college friend I don't see nearly enough of anymore offering to sell me his 10 foot aluminum jon boat. He stopped fishing a number of years ago and flattered me by saying he thought it should go to someone who'd get more use from it. It fits neatly in the bed of my pickup and seems like just the ticket for fishing the desert lakes under oar or electric motor power. With no trailer or gas motor, does it even have to be registered?
Thanks in advance,
